Commissions

Whilst I enjoy realising things of my own design, the challenge of converting other people's ideas into solid and useful objects is an exciting challenge that I am always delighted to accept.

I normally make use of the natural colours and grain patterns of both native European and exotic hardwoods, often combined in striking and innovative ways. You can see a number of my own design concepts in my Designer Furniture Gallery.

The most exciting area to work in is the fusion of classical shapes and proportions with modern living; the challenge of making something that is in keeping with existing furniture (whether old or modern) but with a style and character that will not look dated as fashion (inevitably) changes. I aim to make items that will stand the test of time, both in terms of construction that is appropriate for the intended use and in terms of form, proportion and utility. The shakers eschewed unnecessary adornment for spiritual reasons; I believe that, with careful selection of colour, texture, form and function, objects exhibit their own natural beauty.

Consultation

The first stage is for you the client and me as the designer to discuss the objectives and requirements of the items. The designers' work is to add flair to the client's concepts and to produce a design that can be realised and that will withstand the rigours of daily use.

You may have some idea of the use and location that you want items to be put; these are important factors in the design. Also important are other items in the environment, the intended emotional response to the room or space and the practicalities of using the objects. But equally, there will be elements that have not been fully considered, where you are relying on my previous experience and my design ideas to flesh out an outline concept. I will gladly discus with you all aspects of the items before producing a design. I will also discuss and sketch out particular aspects of possible designs.

At this stage a budget needs to be set to determine the types of materials that can be used and the complexity (or simplicity) of the design.

Design

Based on the consultation, I will produce a design for the items and possibly some samples of design features, colours and finishes. This will be followed by another consultation to agree the final design or to discuss changes. Once the designs are finalised, I can produce a full written quotation for a fixed price including delivery where appropriate. This will also include a timescale of when I can make the items. It should be appreciated that the time from order to delivery can be quite extended; I may need to order rare materials, I will need to ensure that wood is properly seasoned so that it will not twist and crack shortly after delivery, plus of course the time for me to make the items.

Realisation

An important aspect of new custom furniture is that draws, doors, lids, etc. should be a close fit and yet they should never bind. Wood, being a natural product, will change size and shape as humidity levels change. Depending on the design, I may ask to test the humidity levels of existing furniture so that I can match these conditions while we make your items.

I am able to finish furniture with a wide variety of finishes. Each finish has its own benefits and drawbacks. Some finishes produce a high gloss, some a fine lustre, others are barely visible. Some finishes are hard wearing and low maintenance, some require a little attention every so often, some age gracefully with the wood to produce a natural patina, some will help keep the vibrant colours "as new". The type of finish will have been discussed and agreed as part of the consultation - on delivery I will give you guidance on the long term maintenance of the finish.

Payment

Payment plans depend on the items being considered and will be specified in full as part of the written quotation and design. For items up to €2000 we require a deposit of 20% of the quoted price before I will commence with the realisation of the design. Cancellation terms will be included with the quotation. Full payment is due on delivery. For items over €2000 I will discuss payment options as part of the consultation.

For more information

Commissioning a piece of custom furniture is a very exciting and rewarding thing to do. But it is essential that the client and the designer have a clear understanding of each other. This website can only give you a flavour of what I can produce and how I can work with you on realising your vision. Our gallery is a convenient way of getting a better feeling of my creations; I aim to have a variety of items on display showing different design concepts. I would also be delighted to discuss with you your needs and ideas.
